Nr. 4, Der Alte Schwede, 12.08.2013 - 12:39 When I came from Paris to Sweden, one of the first things which really struck me was facing an army of bird watchers. It seems Sweden has the largest number of bird lovers lovers per capita. At the time I took these people as nothing else but “Sonderlinge”. A few years later a friend of mine and future Professor of Russian Language and Literature at American university was leaving Sweden for the USA.I was the only guest at good-buye party. When we finished a bottle of Absolut vodka, couple of bottles of wine and a bottle of beer each, I have asked him: “Ilya, why in the world you are leaving Sweden? You have learned Swedish, students admire you…Why to leave the country where one just established himself?” The answer was very simple:“How can one live in the country where 90% of population are crazy about bird watching? They are able to watch “der Vogelschau” for hours, like there is nothing else to do!No, my dear this country is not for normal people.” By that time I lived in Sweden almost five years, have accepted all bird watchers 100%.My chef at Slaviska institutionen, Professor Dr.Lars Steensland, was “ein leidenschaftlich bird watcher” and the author of Swedish-Russian dictionary on birds. Years past, Ilyusha came back to Lund to empty his appartment and to pack his library on Russian poetry. We met and prospering young professor invited me to share with him a case of expensive Spanish rouge. When the first bottle has gone, have asked him about his free time activities. He laughed and said:“Bird watching, man!Bird watching!” More years have passed, I moved to my beloved Berlin and spent some of my free time bird watching. In 2005 have met Heidi zu Klampen (or blogger “Grabowskis Katze” if you wish) and had chats with her then and now. Eight years later learned that Heidi is a inveterate (leidenschaftlich) bird watcher! Two months later I was swallowing her brilliant note on birds in the Kiez. What a wonderful feeling! |
